Fund-raiser Day 10

Wow! I can’t believe we’re already 10 days into it, but here we are with 35 days remaining and 90% of our goal to be filled.

As exciting as yesterday was (reaching the 10% mark) and as much as we are looking forward to the press that should be hitting this week, today has been a bit of a downer. We kept our heads down and put up more content (a new video nearly every day isn’t an easy thing to do when you have day jobs and are running all the promotion and logistics – there are only a couple of us after-all) and didn’t receive a single donation.

One thing I think we’ve both learned about crowdfunding is that it is an emotional rollercoaster; when something good happens you feel amazing, you know you’re going to make your goal and everyone will love your project, but when you hit a snag, it can feel like no one (not even your friends) care about what you’re trying to do and that you’re being a fool for even trying something so ambitious. Rest assured, NONE OF THESE THINGS ARE TRUE!

It is very unlikely that your project is THE-MOST-AMAZING-THING-TO-HAPPEN-THIS-SIDE-OF-THE-MOON, and if it is you’re probably already raking in the cash and not reading this blog, but people most definitely care about it – you just have to introduce it to them and make them realise they care.

Here are a few tips I can pass along:

1. BE PREPARED. Seriously. If you think you are prepared, you’re not. Put together as much content as you can ahead of time. Press releases, press kits, photos, videos, branded materials… You need all of it and more, and you need to have it ready before you launch.

2. HAVE A SCHEDULE. Set aside time to maintain your campaign. I would say at minimum you will need to spend 3-5 hours a day updating your website, emailing people, putting together videos, writing blog posts, updating social media sites.

3. BE SOCIAL. Talk to anyone and everyone about your project. Have different pitches of varying lengths that you can easily work into casual conversations – you never know who’s friend of a friend has exactly what you’re looking for (cash, connections, passion…).
