30 Years of The Charter

Today is the 30th anniversary of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. It is the first part of the Canadian Constitution Act that was passed in 1982 and signed into law on April 17th by Queen Elizabeth II. The Constitution Act replaced the 1960 Canadian Bill of Rights, which was considered insufficient because it was an ordinary Act of Parliment which could be overturned by a simple majority vote in Parliment.

If you want more information on the Charter of Right and Freedoms the Justice Department has a copy of it HERE.

Happy 30th Charter!
